Permits
Building Permit Required
Installation of an EVCS alone does not require a building permit, similar to installation of other electrical appliances. NOTE: The Village strongly encourages consulting an electrical contractor to ensure existing electrical equipment and wiring is capable of handling an EVCS.
Electrical work needed to serve an EV charging station does require a building permit. Examples of projects requiring a permit include:
- Upgrading electric utility service to building/site - see ComEd's Modification & Relocation Service Application
- Adding circuits to a panel
- Running new wiring or conduit
- Adding one or more outlet
Please visit the Building Permits page for more information on obtaining a permit. The following checklist of information/documentation will generally be required for an electrical permit:
- location of EVCS
- electrical plans indicating system feeds, wiring, underground conduit, and load calculations
- cut sheets for all electrical components
-
if underground piping is being installed, sketch of work to be done on a plat of survey showing location and depth of trenching
Building Permit Fees
Fees will be in accordance with the standard building permit fee schedule (see miscellaneous fee rates). The standard fee for simple electrical permit to accommodate an EVCS install will include a plan review and two inspections (rough and final) for a total of $114 residential or $159 commercial. More extensive work may require additional inspections and fees.
Other Permits
Note that larger EVCS projects, such as the installation of a DC fast charging bank as a primary use of a commercial site, will require zoning approval and engineering permits and/or electrical service upgrades through ComEd.
Certified Contractors
The Village does not license contractors, but the Illinois Commerce Commission regularly updates a list of Electric Vehicle Charging Station installers and registered contractors who are certified to complete installation. The Village recommends using this resource to identify a qualified contractor to complete your project
